Using film to support learning, professional development and careers education

Schools are under increasing pressure to deliver strong outcomes, support diverse learners and make best use of limited time and resources. Film can play a practical role in meeting these challenges, helping to bring learning to life while supporting engagement, discussion and creativity across the curriculum.

Into Film is the UK’s leading charity for film in education. It works with schools to give children and young people – particularly those from underserved communities – opportunities to discover, watch, critique, review and make films. Used well, film can support learning for pupils of all ages and abilities, speaking across background, gender and experience.

A core part of Into Film’s free offer is its range of curriculum-linked classroom resources. Designed to be classroom-ready, these resources use film as a stimulus for learning and include practical activities for lessons and after-school clubs. Many are supported by PowerPoint presentations with embedded clips, making them easy for teachers to pick up and use straight away.

For school leaders, this offers a way to support high-quality teaching without adding to staff workload. Resources are clearly linked to curriculum areas and can be used flexibly to support literacy, critical thinking, discussion and creativity.

Into Film+ is a free*, classroom-ready streaming service for UK schools.

Designed with busy teachers in mind, it makes it easy to stream a wide range of films, shorts, documentaries and TV programmes legally and safely in the classroom. Films are selected to support learning across subjects and age groups, with optional curriculum-linked resources available to support lesson planning.

Used by thousands of educators, Into Film+ offers a simple way to bring the power of film into teaching and learning for pupils aged 5 to 19.

Professional development is another key area of support. Into Film offers free training and CPD opportunities for educators working with children and young people aged 5 to 19. These include face-to-face sessions, webinars and online courses, all focused on enriching teaching and learning practice through film.

Training is delivered regularly across the UK and is designed to be practical and relevant, giving teachers approaches they can apply immediately in the classroom. For schools, this provides accessible CPD that supports staff development without placing additional strain on budgets.

Careers education is an important part of Into Film’s work. The charity works closely with the UK film industry and partners, including the British Film Institute, to support education, information, advice and guidance around screen industry careers. Its Careers Hub helps careers professionals and educators stay up to date with resources, training and information to support young people’s understanding of the wide range of roles available across the screen industries.

All Into Film’s resources, training and careers guidance are available 24/7 and free of charge through an Into Film account. For schools new to the charity, setting up an account is quick and provides access to hundreds of curriculum-linked resources, CPD opportunities and enrichment activities.

As schools continue to balance academic priorities with engagement, inclusion and meaningful careers provision, film offers a practical and flexible way to support teaching and learning across the school.
