The just-launched STEM Racing Discovery has been developed by the team at STEM Racing to introduce pupils aged 6+ to STEM learning through an interactive classroom project. Project Director, Tom Milner, tells us more…
Why did you decide to develop STEM Racing Discovery?
We wanted to create something that took the pressure off teachers; that didn’t require hours of at-home preparation or demand precious classroom time with a complex activity setup, but still delivered an incredibly rich, varied, and hands-on learning experience for their students. So, we came up with STEM Racing Discovery – an all-in-one project that contains absolutely everything they need; from activity worksheets with comprehensive teaching notes to car building kits and racing equipment, there isn’t anything we haven’t thought of!
Essentially, STEM Racing Discovery has been developed to enable teachers to focus on doing what they do best – inspiring the next generation of engineers and pioneers.
How does STEM Racing Discovery work?
Working in pairs or small teams, pupils design, make, test, and race their own model cars on a 12-metre track. The process begins with folding a pre-stamped chassis net to create a standard 3D racing car with wheels and axles. Students then research and design their own body shell, testing and refining their ideas to improve aerodynamics and performance using the provided launch system and roll-out racetrack.

What resources are provided with STEM Racing Discovery?
We worked in collaboration with education specialists to develop six structured Units of Work. These take students on a complete learning journey through Teamwork, Branding & Development, Aerodynamics, Design & Build, Analyse & Modify, and Let’s Race! Each unit is filled with engaging classroom activities that teach as pupils take part, and these fun, hands-on resources help develop understanding of key STEM principles in an exciting, practical context.
Alongside the student worksheets is an accompanying Teachers’ Guide which contains everything you need to teach STEM Racing Discovery with confidence and ease. With detailed lesson plans, learning objectives and structured guidance for each unit, along with links to student worksheets, videos, portfolios, and assessment activities, it has been developed to be a pick-up-and-go guide.

What skills does STEM Racing Discovery teach?
Rooted in STEM, the project enables students to explore key scientific principles such as forces, motion, and aerodynamics while learning to design, test, and refine products through the design–make–evaluate process.
But it’s actually so much more than STEM alone – students also build essential soft skills like communication, creativity, critical thinking, leadership, and project management awareness. It really is the most rewarding part of the project to watch young people work together on a shared project – collaborating, deliberating, and improving with each lesson learned.
How much does STEM Racing Discovery cost?
STEM Racing Discovery costs £1,600 (ex. VAT) and includes a 50-car project pack, roll-out racetrack, and an air launch system. Made to the highest quality and designed for the ultimate racing experience, this set can be used year after year, ensuring it becomes an integral part of a school’s STEM curriculum. Replacement car kits can also be purchased separately from just £26 (ex. VAT).
